Review and Comment on the new School Lunch regulations

Youth volunteers from the Hunger Coalition (Atlanta, GA)
Last week the US Department of Agriculture proposed some revisions to President Obama’s upgrade of the federal program that runs public school lunches throughout the country. Now through April 13th, 2011 you can review the policy and register your comments online here or via letter. For a before and after comparison of the food which has historically been served and what will be served check out this chart. Deborah Kotz of the Boston Globe explains her critique of the program here and Ed Bruske of Grist explains here that while most of the changes are positive, they fail to reel in children’s sugar intake.
Chef Kurt Michael Friese Reviews Farm Together Now
Chef Kurt Michael Friese of Iowa gives props to Farm Together Now on his fantastic “Real Food For All” blog:
He says: “Enter Farm Together Now: A Portrait of People, Places, and Ideas for a New Food Movement (by Amy Franceschini & Daniel Tucker, Chronicle Books 2010). Here we find not rock stars but real people, true agrarians in the old sense of the word who understand that food, farms and fertility actually matter in a post-industrialized world. Twenty in-depth interviews with farmers of all types from across the country, accompanied by the illuminating and personal photography of Anne Hammersky, make for a revealing set of portraits – an album of the evolving American farm…These stories provide a convincing argument for the proposition that there is indeed life beyond chemical and confinement farming, and that the solution to the problems of agriculture lies in many strong hands working together to bring food to their neighbors.” (read the full review here)
Thanks Kurt!

Our friend and one of the farmers featured in FTN, Jim Knopik (of Fullerton, Nebraska), just passed along this video series of Kevin Fulton explaining some of the problems he sees with animal welfare and rural ecology resulting from the use of Confined Animal Feeding Operations or CAFOs. Check out the first video here:

FTN Gets a Shout Out from Grist and Michael Pollan
We are happy to share the news that GRIST picked their top 10 food books of 2010 and Michael Pollan picked Farm Together Now.
He says:
My favorite book of the season is Farm Together Now: A Portrait of People, Places, and Ideas for a New Food Movement, by Amy Franceschini and Daniel Tucker. It consists of interviews with a wide range of farmers (and activists) who you haven’t heard of. Inspiring without being romantic in the least, it advances the whole conversation about sustainable agriculture and access.
